Picture this scenario: You’re doing great work with a client or with someone in a group you’re leading. And in the work, you show up as your awesome self with your wonderful personality. And then one day, maybe at the end of a session or maybe in an email, says “I love our sessions so much and also I feel like we have so much in common. Do you want to grab coffee?”

In other words….what do you do when a client wants to hang out as friends? Is it the right thing to do? Is it the wrong thing to do? Would it be weird? How do I make this moment that they’re asking not be weird? Is it even allowed or ethical?

That’s what we’re going to be discussing today. So that you can be empowered and do the quote unquote right thing when this situation comes up! And this is an important topic not just about friendship, but about your coaching container with your client…keeping it clean and trustworthy and empowering and effective.

It was the Spring of 2010 and I was hosting a 1/2

It was the Spring of 2010 and I was hosting a 1/2 day workshop & ritual in midtown Manhattan called "Be Seen" (some of you here may have actually gone to that event!).

A week before the workshop, we only had about 8 people registered...and I had been planning for 30!

For a few hours, I was in a panic.
• What was I going to do to fill the workshop?
• With only 8 people, how would I even re-coup the astronomical fee I was paying for a Manhattan space?

On and on my anxiety went.

And then I remembered: Referrals.

At that time in my career, I didn't love asking for referrals. I didn't want to look desperate or needy. I was worried people would think I was annoying or too sales-y.

But I decided to do it anyway. Because I knew I needed more people for the workshop.

I quick started calling and/or emailing current and past clients,
colleagues....anyone who knew how powerful my work was...and asking them to invite friends.

I basically had to take deep breaths before each call or email to get myself excited and not feeling icky to do it.

BY THE TIME THE DAY OF THE WORKSHOP ARRIVED, WE HAD 55 PEOPLE REGISTERED!!!!!

• All because of the power of referrals.
• All because referral are so absolutely key when it comes to consistent income generation.

Not only did I make good money on that workshop (that was just the beginning!), but...

12 PEOPLE FROM THAT GROUP OF 55 WENT ON TO JOIN MY MASTERMIND.

I'm putting that in bold not be obnoxious, but because OMG - all in one fell swoop, I generated a ton of income from referrals.

Referrals are always easier to sell to than people who haven't been referred to you. That's because people trust their friends.

And the story doesn't even end there: many of those 12 people continued on with me for years....and themselves referred others to me....who then referred others to me....and so on and so forth.

So much more powerful than a complicated funnel or a FB ad (though I do also use those in my business!).
