In many different ways.   When I first became a practitioner 20 years ago, I never ever would have admitted that to anyone, and in fact went to lengths to hide it.   I thought that being messy and imperfect was shameful, and meant that there was something very wrong with me or that I was disqualified as a good practitioner or that I had a lot I needed to “fix”.   But the truth is (and thank goodness I learned this along the way):   All humans and human lives are very messy and imperfect.   We all have our own heartache.   We all have our own triggers.   We all experience complications in relationships and friendships.   We all sometimes wonder about the road not taken.   We all have certain goals that we haven’t (yet) been able to achieve.   We all make mistakes. A lot of them. And sometimes, unfortunately, those mistakes may also hurt others.   This is the human condition. There is no other way.   Yes, of course, it is often worthwhile to work on or evolve some of the messy parts & situations. But thinking that we will, at some point, achieve total and everlasting peace, harmony, and perfection is a trap that can keep us in a cycle of feeling badly about ourselves and frustrated.   With all of the perfection and glossiness of social media these days, it’s easy to slip into that trap of thinking things can be perfect - and that other people have achieved that perfection! But that’s not really life. Period.    So, the first principle for being able to navigate our messy lives: to know that life is meant to be messy and that there’s no way to achieve perfection.    I have found that it can be liberating to own and accept this truth. To really understand that our lives aren’t meant to be neat or perfect, that the goal is not for things to be neat and perfect, that one can absolutely have a meaningful and satisfying life even with the heartache and the mistakes and the triggers and the complications.    Second principle for being able to navigate our messy lives: Have compassion for yourself and for others. Practice Softening.   When we get caught in the myth of perfection, we forget to love ourselves, to have compassion for ourselves and our situations, to have patience. This can make ALL the difference. Remembering that we are worthy of love no matter what. Remembering that we are humans having a very imperfect, human experience.    And then, also remembering that other people out there are also having a very imperfect, human experience.    It is so easy to inadvertently fall into the thinking that when someone triggers you, rubs you the wrong way, even wrongs you....that the person is "bad". That the person had bad intentions, or is uber-selfish, or intentionally out of integrity and could care less, etc., etc.   And sometimes, some of it might be true.   But much of the time, it's messy humans being human.   It's someone being in their own trigger and therefore acting selfish. Or someone being in their own fear and therefore crossing a boundary. Or someone mis-perceiving the situation because of their own wounds, and therefore doing something not so kosher in order to stay "safe".   It's not that we don't excuse the things that are not OK or we don't set boundaries when boundaries need to be set. Harmful or hurtful transgressions should be addressed. That's important.   But that being said, I have found that life becomes more beautiful, peaceful, connected and just a little less painful and brutal when I can also stop myself from making sweeping judgements about another person's character (oh how my Inner Judge LOVES to make sweeping judgments!), and instead remember that this is another human being with a heart and a soul who most likely means well (most likely), and is simply having a human experience. And a rough day. (Or week. Or year).   We can be so, so quick to make other people the "enemy" in a way...instead of remembering that they're simply in this messy thing called life too.   The moments when I can give others the benefit of the doubt about WHO they are and where there heart truly is underneath the layers (even while setting my boundary or speaking my truth or deciding I don't want to be in touch with them anymore, period.)....those are the moments when I also have more compassion for myself too.   And one last principle for now for navigating our messy lives: Grieve when you’re called to grieve, and also laugh at the messiness a bit too.   Tough things happen in life, and yet because of the speed of modern life, we often don’t take the time to be with our emotions, to consciously and intentionally be sad and grieve losses, heartaches, hardships. For most folks, we spend a lot of time WORRYING about those things and feeling anxious about those things…but we don’t really make the sacred space to FEEL into the grief of those things.    Making space for the emotion is a transformational skill, and can often be a healing experience. It allows us to really be with ourselves, to be authentic and honest with ourselves, to move the energy of the emotion through us. Sometimes having a good, honest cry can help you find your grounding and peace.   That being said, also remember to laugh about the messiness when appropriate. Have a sense of humor about it. When appropriate, laugh at the ridiculousness of the argument you’ve been having with your best friend; laugh at the fact that you still haven’t kicked that bad habit after all these years (for me, it’s biting my nails); laugh that your car broke down during the road trip. That can be a healing experience too, and help you find the next steps to navigate the messiness.   These days, I find I am usually more than OK with the messiness in my life.    I don’t hate on it or make it wrong.   I simply understand that it’s part of life. Annoying at times for sure. Painful sometimes too. But not unnatural. Not something that makes me or my life wrong.   When I understand this fact, I can settle into seeing all the gifts and blessings that the same messy, imperfect life has given me. - [11 Behaviors That Can Hold Your Clients (& You) Back from Taking Action & Achieving Their Goals](https://applieddepthinstitute.com/11-behaviors-that-can-hold-your-clients-you-back-from-taking-action-achieving-their-goals/): It’s one thing to vision and set goals with clients (or for yourself).    It’s a completely other thing for your clients to actually take action on those goals, and move them forward.    There are many behaviors that sabotage and hold clients back from making progress, and then of course there are underlying reasons for those behaviors.    As practitioners who help others achieve their goals, we want to have tools & techniques to transform the behaviors and the underlying reasons and to do it all in a process where your client can love themselves deeply through it and feel empowered.   The first step is to be able to identify those behaviors that sabotage and hold clients back from taking aligned action and reaching their goals.    Here’s a list of 11 Behaviors that you want to be on the lookout for when your clients  - or you - aren’t making the progress they’d like to make. This list isn’t exhaustive, but these are some of the biggies you’ll encounter:   Procrastination: Putting it off, and putting it off….and putting it off. Sometimes, the procrastination is painful, sitting in front of the computer screen, ready to write, and blanking out; other times procrastination looks more like choosing short term comfort (Netflix, anyone!) over the long term satisfaction of achieving goals.   Lack of Planning: You don’t plan how and when to take action steps at all, or you don’t plan well; either underestimating the amount of time certain tasks might take or not scheduling any time to do it at all.   Social Media Doom Scrolling that leads to Compare & Despair: You spend time scrolling and see other people’s supposed success (don’t believe everything that comes in your feed), and then not only do you feel dysregulated from all that technology, but you feel so bad or hopeless about yourself or your own situation that you don’t take action.    Blaming Others: You take a step forward and then things don’t quite go the way you want them to…so you blame someone or something else for foiling you, and then stay stuck stewing in anger or feeling victimized instead of problem-solving and moving forward.   Moving into Not-Good-Enough: This is “compare and despair”, but without the “compare”; you decide - consciously or not - that you’re not good enough to reach the goal or reach the goal well, and so you stop taking action or self-sabotage.   Getting Confused: The goal at hand feels so scary or overwhelming that even though you are whip-smart, you get totally confused about what actions to take or how to take them.   Perfectionism: You’re unwittingly operating under the belief that if it’s not absolutely perfect, it’s not good at all. So you do nothing to avoid not being perfect. Or, you fool yourself into thinking you can attain perfection that you get so caught up in revising and revising again…that you never finish the task.   Chasing after someone else’s goal: You set your goal up from a place of “should” instead of desire, or because it really is more your Dad’s expectation for you than your own expectation for yourself, or it’s because what dominant culture sees as successful or good…and then you can’t figure out why you lack the motivation to take action on the goal.   Taking too many actions: Your tendency may be to get so anxious or overzealous about achieving a goal or getting it right that you scramble and furiously take lots of action…but not the right action, not the things that will actually move you forward. And then you feel tired, drained, and frustrated.   Not asking for help: You really want to make something happen, but…there are pieces you need help with. But…you don’t think to ask for help or you can’t bring yourself to ask for help. So you don’t ask for help. And then you don’t get your stuff done.   Not taking a real break: In our Go! Go! Go! Culture, we often push ourselves and our bodies and our psyches past their natural limits. There is so much to do. Because being overworked and being overwhelmed are normalized in society, you may not realize that the reason you’ve become less efficient, less motivated, or downright resistant to taking action is because what you really need is a break.   Helping your client name and identify the behaviors that are holding them back is a great first step toward getting them back on track. After all, what we do not name and keep in the blindspots can cause way more damage than what we see clearly. (Remember to do this step with love, respect, and compassion for your client!)   This is a very important step, and it is really just a first step. After you identify the behaviors, use trauma-informed tools and skills to support your clients to break the behavior patterns and move towards aligned action taking and empowered steps towards the goals they deeply desire. - [The Healing Art of Normalizing (Transformational Principle + Skill)](https://applieddepthinstitute.com/the-healing-art-of-normalizing/): There is one singular thing that is often more detrimental than unbefriended fear, than limiting beliefs, than unrealized shadows than un-navigated resistances than sucky situations. - [There Is No Magic Pill (And That’s Good News…)](https://applieddepthinstitute.com/there-is-no-magic-pill-and-thats-good-news/): Over the last two decades, I’ve coached and trained a lot of incredible transformational practitioners. So much transformation on the personal level. So many skills mastered, and happy clients that they have served.   Ending cycles always brings up so much for me:   immense joy in having had the opportunity to share myself and my work...   deep feelings of honor & privilege for being able to hold the space for such amazing people and to learn from them & grow with them...   incredible satisfaction in witnessing the breakthroughs and transformations...   sadness in saying goodbye to a particular circle & experience - while I know so many clients continue with me, it will never be this exact circle again....   And...   Because I'm me (ah, the joys & annoyances of being me!), I always walk away feeling BOTH incredibly amazing/happy/fulfilled/good (enough)....   ...AND...   also feeling not good enough, focusing on what I could have done better, wondering where things weren't epic enough.   Such a strange combo of "that was wonderful" and "that was not wonderful."   It still amazes me how all at the same time, I can feel so confident and feel SO GOOD about the work that I do....while also being critical of it and worried that I didn't "do enough" (even though I know better).   I'm sharing with you to NORMALIZE the experience for you, to take the shame & the frustration out of it for you, just in case you happen to be like me. :)   Even though my whole entire message and purpose and business is based on teaching practitioners how to be AMAZING at what you do, as well as how to have confidence in yourself...I still, after all these years, experience what I call the “Paradox of Confidence” - this feeling of knowing I’m amazing and also feeling very not amazing all at once.   If you experience this too, I want you to know that there is nothing wrong with you.   I want you to know it doesn’t mean you’re not whole and complete exactly as you are.   And I also want you to know that there are ways you can work with the Paradox of Confidence to really benefit yourself, your work, and everyone around you.   The Paradox of Confidence also very likely comes up for some of your clients: the experience of not feeling good enough even when there is another part of themselves that is confident and knows how wonderful they are.   This Paradox of Confidence can show up in so many forms. For example:   the mother who all at once knows she is a wonderful mothers but also really doubts herself the teacher who all at once know they are making beautiful impact with their students but also obsesses on the students who didn’t think they were the best thing since sliced bread the artist who all at once feels deep satisfaction in the work she’s created yet also worries that it will not be loved & appreciated   I've come to learn over the years is that is it oh-so-very-human to have these different layers of experience all at once, especially for those us who are recovering perfectionists/rescuers/people pleasers/needers to be amazing in everyone's eyes.   I’ve also come to learn that the work isn’t about making this experience of feeling not-good-enough “go away for forever”; the work is about tending to it, transforming through it when it comes up, and using it to connect more deeply to yourself and your value.   If you don’t know how to manage this very human experience in transformational ways, it can foster even deeper feelings of self-doubt, self-criticism, frustration, and inability to really feel pleasure and satisfaction in your accomplishments & self.   So there is NOTHING WRONG at all with feeling & experience The Paradox of Confidence. How you respond to it and what you do with it makes all the difference though - and of course, same goes for how you support your clients who experience this.   In Sacred Depths, we learn a variety of somatic and non-somatic practices to support with all of this.    We learn techniques to be able to work with the Myth of Perfection.    We learn techniques to be able to Befriend the parts of ourselves that are not so savory.   We learn techniques for deeper self-acceptance.   We learn techniques for working with inner child and supporting inner child towards greater self-love and confidence.   We learn techniques for re-wiring negative thought patterns.   We learn techniques for tapping into & harnessing the more confident and self-assured parts of ourselves.   When the Paradox of Confidence comes up, it’s so important to be intentional about all of it. To harness & have techniques to work with the "not good enough" feelings vs. letting them eat you alive.    Through doing the deep work around it, one thing I’ve really come to appreciate about the Paradox of Confidence is this - it IS totally related to my very healthy commitment to excellence, and when I actively do my work on the Paradox & my not-good-enoughness, it keeps me on my toes, has me always improving & deepening, helps me continue to evolve...and I am POSITIVE it is part of what makes me such a good practitioner.   As ever, I am in such deep gratitude that I've been given such amazing opportunity to impact so many people...and that I get to connect with so many amazing people. Making impact and being impacted, co-creating transformation...well, it's a messy job sometimes, on a lot of levels. And I wouldn't have it any other way. - [The Deep Dark Secret of the Coaching Industry](https://applieddepthinstitute.com/the-deep-dark-secret-of-the-coaching-industry/): There is a deep, dark secret that impacts pretty much everyone in the coaching, self-development, and transformational industries: - [The Hidden Trap of Breakthroughs](https://applieddepthinstitute.com/breakthrough-vs-transformation-makes-all-the-difference-in-your-client-work/): The coaching, wellness, and healing industries tend to use the terms "Breakthrough" & "Transformation" a lot – and interchangeably – when marketing to clients. - [Helping Our Clients & Ourselves Through These Difficult Times](https://applieddepthinstitute.com/helping-our-clients-ourselves-through-these-difficult-times/): Considering everything that is and has been happening in the world, it has been in many ways, a tough couple of years. - [The Ways We Make Ourselves Small (& What to Do About It)](https://applieddepthinstitute.com/the-ways-we-make-ourselves-small-what-to-do-about-it/): Something I hear over and over and over when practitioners first come to me for support is that they’re making themselves small: - [5 New Learnings About Facilitating, Teaching, and Selling](https://applieddepthinstitute.com/some-personal-professional-learnings-from-this-last-week/): What a week it has been. I admire and have learned a lot from those who naturally have a positive outlook on life. For better or worse, I did not grow up in an environment that modeled any kind of positive thinking. In fact, quite the opposite. I grew up with two immigrant parents whose own parents had survived the Holocaust. My parents trusted no one, always expected the worst, and because of their own trauma, they were perceiving a constant threat of annihilation. It was kind of like living in Catastrophic Thinking Central. - [The Most Important Coaching and Facilitation Tool You Will Ever Need](https://applieddepthinstitute.com/the-most-important-coaching-and-facilitation-tool-you-will-ever-need/): Want to know THE most important component of Transformational Facilitation & Coaching? - [When Someone Steals Your Work](https://applieddepthinstitute.com/when-someone-steals-your-work/): A few years ago, I was scrolling through Facebook, I noticed a post from someone who has taken ALL of my training programs over the last years.
