COACHING + CURRICULUM TOOL Whenever you introduce COACHING + CURRICULUM TOOL

Whenever you introduce a new term in your curriculum, it's important to take a few moments to share what your definition of that term is. The reason: terms have different meanings to different people, and you want everyone in the room to be on the same page with you. If not, your container for learning isn't as tight as it can be.

So for example, if your Module/Exercise is about "Making Friends with Your Inner Critic", you want to share your definition of Inner Critic and how you are using it in the module/exercise....and you may also want to define what "making friends" means as well.

I know this is such an obvious point, but it's a point a lot of teachers tend to skip and then it can cause issues later.

I also teach about this in Sacred Depths Coach Training, from a 1:1 coaching perspective:

Often times, when a client uses a term/concept that she hasn't used before, one of my first coaching questions is to ask what her definition of that is.

For example, if a client says, "I want to be in a loving relationship"....I ask her to define what a loving relationship is for her.

I do this for two reasons:

1)So that she can clarify and create awareness for herself

2)So that I don't project any of my own ideas of what a loving relationship is onto her process.

Do you use "Definitions" as a coaching and teaching tool? Would love to hear!

Every couple of months Yael likes to create a spa Every couple of months Yael likes to create a spa day for me and Jon, complete with soothing music, massages, meditations that she leads, and even stuffed animals to get cozy with as we are tucked under a blanket.

We are big fans in our household of the importance of slowing down and rejuvenation (though we don’t always practice it!), and I’m glad the value made its way to Yael. She’s also a natural space holder, nurturer, appreciator of human nature and coach-in-training, so it’s not surprising she loves to create these yummy experiences!

(1 of 2) This morning, Yael was in bed with me and (1 of 2)
This morning, Yael was in bed with me and Jon and in a little bit of a mood. She was being kind of whiny and it was getting late and Jon and I were getting a little stressed because she needed to get dressed to get the day going. At some point, Yael got mad about something and jerked her leg...and inadvertently kicked Jon in the head.

Normally, if something like this were to happen, I'd look Yael in the eyes, let her know I love her and that I know it was a mistake and we all make mistakes and that I've done a similar thing before, and then at an appropriate moment ask her what she might do differently next time she gets angry.

But, because Jon and I were already slightly on edge, we kind of reacted by giving her a little bit of a stern look and asking her to go to her room to get dressed.

We didn't scream. We didn't yell. We didn't tell her she did something wrong.

And yet, that little moment still activated shame.

I could tell immediately because she stormed out of the room and said she was going to stay in her room forever (code for "I feel terrible about what I've done and I am embarrassed and I don't even deserve to be with anyone; I will punish myself by being all alone).

I found Yael in her room and at first, she refused to even look at me. She was hiding her head under her pillow.

Thankfully, because Yael and I have a pretty sturdy container of trust and safety established, she was able to articulate on her own: "You and daddy were really mean. I didn't mean to kick him in the head and now I have to be alone."

I immediately told her I understood, and that it was just a mistake, and that me and Jon love her always, and that I get why she's feeling why she's feeling...and I also apologized that we didn't let her know all of that right away.

She was silent. Didn't say a word. But I could see from the look on her face that something was happening inside of her. She was softening...towards herself. She was finding a little bit of compassion for herself for what had happened. She was feeling heard and understood....
Jon and I had a glorious week in Paris. We walked Jon and I had a glorious week in Paris. We walked 10+ miles a day, wandering the streets and taking it all in. We ate a lot (you can do gluten free in Paris and still enjoy!). We learned a lot. We philosophized a lot. I got to remember my love of art (did you know I have a masters in art history and used to be a curator), including going back to my favorite museum, the musee D’Orsay. And while we missed our kids, we had the beautiful opportunity to just be with each other, just the two of us, for a week.

I love vacation for many reasons, not the least of which is that it always gives me fresh perspective on my life. This last week was no different and did not disappoint.
