00:00:49 Joanna Lindenbaum
About what they do and so that more of our clients experience life changing shifts, let’s get started.
00:01:04 Joanna Lindenbaum
Welcome back to the podcast. Today’s episode is dropping on Labor Day, and I hope that those of us living in the US are at least somewhat taking it easy today. My offices are closed for the long weekend, and that’s why today’s episode is a mini episode. So even though if you’ve been listening to this podcast.
00:01:26 Joanna Lindenbaum
For a while, you know that I do like to talk a lot. My plan is for today’s episode to be about 15 minutes or less.
00:01:34 Joanna Lindenbaum
Quick, easy and actionable and I’m going to be sharing three things that are proven to make your coaching and client sessions more effective. And of course we need our sessions to always be as effective as possible to really help move our clients towards their goals and the transformation they want to experience.
00:01:56 Joanna Lindenbaum
When we’re more effective in our client sessions, not only are we making greater impact in the world and not only do we get to feel more satisfied in our work, but we are creating when we are being effective, what I call the three Rs.
00:02:14 Joanna Lindenbaum
If you’ve been a longtime listener of this podcast, you’ve heard me mention the three R’s many times, and this is a mainstay of our work in the sacred depths. Transformational practitioner training. The three R’s are referrals, renewals and reputation.
00:02:34 Joanna Lindenbaum
In my book, being an effective and extraordinary practitioner is the best.
00:02:43 Joanna Lindenbaum
Marketing strategy in the world it it will help you be recession proof because when you are extraordinary when you are effective, when you are able to Co create real and long lasting change and results with your clients.
00:03:04 Joanna Lindenbaum
That’s when they refer others to you. That’s when they renew with you. They want to keep on going with you. And that’s when your reputation grows. Because of the incredible testimonials that you receive because of all of those referrals that are out there in the world, and because you then have more confidence.
00:03:27 Joanna Lindenbaum
To put yourself out there when you know that you are doing.
00:03:30 Joanna Lindenbaum
Your best work.
00:03:33 Joanna Lindenbaum
So all that being said, I’m going to share 3 tips today that will help make your client sessions more effective, and I’m cherry picking these 3 tips from dozens and dozens of tips and techniques and skills and nuances and flourishes.
00:03:52 Joanna Lindenbaum
That we learn and master inside of sacred depths. I’m gonna give you a little taste of some of it today. So here we go first to.
00:04:02 Joanna Lindenbaum
Make sure in each and every one of your sessions that you are setting intentions at the beginning of the session. When you set intentions at the beginning of your session, your sessions.
00:04:22 Joanna Lindenbaum
Will be way more efficient. You’ll do less beating around the Bush or meandering around in the session trying to find the thread or the meat or the root.
00:04:37 Joanna Lindenbaum
You’ll have a much, much better chance of your client leaving the session satisfied and feeling like they got exactly what they wanted and needed. And when you set intentions at the beginning of a session, you will help your clients make bigger headway on their goals. There is.
00:04:57 Joanna Lindenbaum
Lots of different ways that setting intentions can look inside of a coaching session, and I’m gonna give you 2 ideas right now. Two different options right now to start to think about. The first is you can ask at the beginning of a session.
00:05:15 Joanna Lindenbaum
What would you like to receive from our time today?
00:05:21 Joanna Lindenbaum
So one of my favorite questions to ask at the beginning of a session, an alternative is what is it that you want to walk away with from our time together today I observe a lot of coaching sessions and I can tell you that the sessions that don’t.
00:05:39 Joanna Lindenbaum
Start off with a question like this where you set intentions even in the best of scenarios, they still have to run over time because it takes too long to get to the deeper threads of the session. When you don’t set those intentions upfront and in the worst of scenarios when you don’t set intentions upfront.
00:06:02 Joanna Lindenbaum
A session can end up being not productive at all, just going around in circles trying to look for what is what is it that we’re doing here today?
00:06:13 Joanna Lindenbaum
Now I will tell you that while asking one of those intentions settings is a really good start.
00:06:24 Joanna Lindenbaum
Just asking the intention question, it’s not enough.
00:06:31 Joanna Lindenbaum
When you ask the question, you need to be using your deep listening skills to hear what your client is saying, how they’re answering. You also need your breakthrough.
00:06:45 Joanna Lindenbaum
Questioning skills and you’re creating awareness skills in tip top.
00:06:49 Joanna Lindenbaum
Shape because sometimes you’ll ask an intention question and your client isn’t going to know upfront in their first response what it is that they really want or they’ll answer. But they’re they’re kind of answer in a circular way.
00:07:09 Joanna Lindenbaum
Or an unclear way, or they’ll just kind of be general and vague and not specific enough when they answer.
00:07:20 Joanna Lindenbaum
So when that happens, you’re gonna wanna use those listening skills, those breakthrough questioning skills, those creating awareness skills to laser coach your client to get clear on what is the most aligned.
00:07:38 Joanna Lindenbaum
Intention for your session now, of course, the intention still may change as you move through the session, but having that as a starting point.
00:07:48 Joanna Lindenbaum
Point I cannot under score how valuable it is in order to be more effective, and it is 110% worthwhile to take the time at the beginning of the session.
00:08:07 Joanna Lindenbaum
To get clear on those intentions, it will help set a really great foundation for your session and it will absolutely taking that time in the beginning will absolutely save you time in the long run.
00:08:23 Joanna Lindenbaum
OK, let’s move on to our second tip today for more effective client sessions and the tip is activate the somatic level of learning and processing.
00:08:38 Joanna Lindenbaum
So have you ever noticed how a client can quote UN quote, get it logically, but they still feel stuck in the same pattern even after awareness has been created. So for example, maybe it’s a client who knew she needed boundaries.
00:08:59 Joanna Lindenbaum
And even though she has that awareness, Oh yes, I need better boundaries. She still freezes every time she tries to create boundaries. Or maybe it’s the client who understands that their fear of visibility is related to when they were little and they messed up in the 1st grade play on the stage in front of everybody.
00:09:21 Joanna Lindenbaum
They get that the current fear of visibility has nothing at all to do with the present moment.
00:09:29 Joanna Lindenbaum
And maybe you have really beautifully helped them create all of that awareness, but still, even afterwards, they still can’t seem to put themselves out there. So coaching that only activates the mind.
00:09:46 Joanna Lindenbaum
Often isn’t enough. We often need to bring in the body as well in order to create long lasting and real transformation.
00:10:00 Joanna Lindenbaum
The intellect is great for insight, for getting clear or naming patterns, for connecting dots, for reframing narratives.
00:10:14 Joanna Lindenbaum
But insight doesn’t automatically translate into a behavior change or into emotional freedom. Many clients can understand their issues. Really. Really.
00:10:30 Joanna Lindenbaum
Well, they may come in to the work with you understanding their issues or through the work with you. They come to understand their issues, right? For example, I, you know client might know XY or Z comes from there perfectionism. But just because they.
00:10:50 Joanna Lindenbaum
Understand.
00:10:53 Joanna Lindenbaum
Oftentimes, they still can’t shift their issues.
00:11:01 Joanna Lindenbaum
And that’s because the body hasn’t caught up with this new with the new idea, the body is where trauma imprints the body is where there is emotional memory. The body is where nervous system conditioning.
00:11:20 Joanna Lindenbaum
Lives, so we need to activate.
00:11:26 Joanna Lindenbaum
The somatic level.
00:11:30 Joanna Lindenbaum
When we include somatic work in our coaching in the work that we do with our clients around fears, patterns, beliefs and shadows, it helps our clients repatterning their nervous systems.
00:11:48 Joanna Lindenbaum
So that they can tolerate new behaviors.
00:11:52 Joanna Lindenbaum
New identities and take new risks. I like the following metaphor as a way of thinking about.
00:12:03 Joanna Lindenbaum
All of this.
00:12:04 Joanna Lindenbaum
It’s like the mind is like software. You can update the code with new insights.
00:12:12 Joanna Lindenbaum
And new beliefs, or at least the idea of new beliefs.
00:12:18 Joanna Lindenbaum
But if the hardware in this metaphor of the body hasn’t also been upgraded.
00:12:26 Joanna Lindenbaum
The program the coding still won’t run smoothly. Somatic work is like updating the hardware so that the new software can actually function.
00:12:41 Joanna Lindenbaum
And a part of this is the understanding that true integration happens when the nervous system and the emotions and the intellect are all aligned.
00:12:57 Joanna Lindenbaum
So there’s so much more that we can say on activating the somatic layer.
00:13:05 Joanna Lindenbaum
In sacred depths we go deep into.
00:13:09 Joanna Lindenbaum
All of the.
00:13:10 Joanna Lindenbaum
The pieces around it into all of the behavior around it into so much more. There’s so much to say on this, and there are also so many different ways and techniques.
00:13:26 Joanna Lindenbaum
That you can use to activate the somatic level so that you can get way deeper into supporting your clients into transformation and change.
00:13:37 Joanna Lindenbaum
And we learned so many of these different skills and techniques in sacred depths. But for now, I want to give you a few beginner ideas on activating the somatic level.
00:13:50 Joanna Lindenbaum
Number one.
00:13:53 Joanna Lindenbaum
Guiding clients to notice sensation.
00:13:56 Joanna Lindenbaum
Things as you are exploring a certain topic. So for example can they notice that their chest tightens up when they talk about having direct conversation with their sister about something? Do they notice?
00:14:17 Joanna Lindenbaum
A buzzing energy in their body when you talk about a particular new idea that they have that might be really aligned for them.
00:14:27 Joanna Lindenbaum
Do they notice that their posture collapse when you’re exploring a certain topic, right? So just starting to toe dip into helping your clients notice sensations. That’s one way to start activating.
00:14:47 Joanna Lindenbaum
The somatic layer.
00:14:50 Joanna Lindenbaum
Another way is to practice.
00:14:56 Joanna Lindenbaum
And embodied rehearsal of a new way of being. So again, this is a pretty easy toe dip beginner way of working with the somatics practice and embodied rehearsal of a new way of being, as an example. Can you lead?
00:15:17 Joanna Lindenbaum
Your client to imagine setting the boundary that they wanna set.
00:15:24 Joanna Lindenbaum
While also standing taller and feeling a sense of openness as they set the boundary.
00:15:36 Joanna Lindenbaum
Again, these are ways to start to step into this somatic work in sacred depths. We look at all of this, as well as a lot of more advanced techniques on activating somatics. When we look at how to work with fear, how to make.
00:15:56 Joanna Lindenbaum
Friends with fear how to rewire neural pathways around certain beliefs. How to work with resistance, et cetera.
00:16:06 Joanna Lindenbaum
OK, third tip, I promise 15 minutes and under. I think we’re going to go a little bit over, but I want to give you one more tip. The third tip for today to be more effective in your client sessions, consult less and Co strategize more. There’s so much to say.
00:16:27 Joanna Lindenbaum
On this topic, but for now I want to share this. If you are coaching well.
00:16:34 Joanna Lindenbaum
And effectively.
00:16:37 Joanna Lindenbaum
Then consulting.
00:16:41 Joanna Lindenbaum
Or even just suggesting things that your clients should be doing. It should be a very, very small part of your session time of the work that you do. If you are consulting a lot inside of a session.
00:17:02 Joanna Lindenbaum
You are probably not being as effective in Co creating change transformation and results.
00:17:11 Joanna Lindenbaum
As you could be.
00:17:13 Joanna Lindenbaum
I always say consulting is absolutely a part of coaching. It’s one of the.
00:17:21 Joanna Lindenbaum
Skills that we.
00:17:22 Joanna Lindenbaum
Use in coaching. But that being said, if you’re truly looking to create change and transformation with clients.
00:17:33 Joanna Lindenbaum
Consult a little bit less.
00:17:37 Joanna Lindenbaum
And instead ask better questions.
00:17:43 Joanna Lindenbaum
Ask better questions and listen more and then reflect more. Now we go deep into this skill and sacred depths. We learn effective ways of consulting where we don’t Co opt our clients.
00:18:03 Joanna Lindenbaum
Agency, inner wisdom, et cetera, because there are.
00:18:07 Joanna Lindenbaum
Better ways and then not good ways to consult inside of coaching and we learn all the insides and outsides of that. But for our episode today, where I want to kind of look at on all of this with you is when you’re strategizing.
00:18:28 Joanna Lindenbaum
With clients.
00:18:30 Joanna Lindenbaum
So when you’re strategizing a plan with clients.
00:18:34 Joanna Lindenbaum
And you know, for each one of you, it’s going to be different depending on the work that you do for some of you, it’s going to be a business strategy for some of you, it’s.
00:18:43 Joanna Lindenbaum
Going to be.
00:18:44 Joanna Lindenbaum
A health strategy that you work on with your clients for some of you, it’s going to be a clean out your client, your closet strategy that you work on with clients for some of you.
00:18:54 Joanna Lindenbaum
It’s gonna be, you know, finding the love of your life strategy with clients for some of you, it’s going to be creating videos, right? Whatever it is, whatever your expertise is.
00:19:09 Joanna Lindenbaum
It’s not that I want you or that I’m suggesting that you leave your expertise out the door and that you don’t consult at all and that you don’t share your hard earned wisdom on the topics and the issues that you know really well. Of course, that’s part of the reason why your clients.
00:19:30 Joanna Lindenbaum
Hire you. But that being said, when you are strategizing a plan with clients.
00:19:40 Joanna Lindenbaum
I want to invite you to think about sharing a little bit less of your expertise.
00:19:50 Joanna Lindenbaum
And instead, strategizing together with your clients before sharing how you think it should be done or what you think the plan is?
00:20:07 Joanna Lindenbaum
Ask your client what their inner wisdom is telling them, or ask them what they feel called to do next, or how they feel called to do it, and then work together to bring your expertise to be able to match.
00:20:29 Joanna Lindenbaum
Your clients desires inner wisdom and what they are ready for, I promise you.
00:20:39 Joanna Lindenbaum
When you do this, your clients will be much more likely to move forward in better ways towards their goals.
00:20:54 Joanna Lindenbaum
OK, so as a review, first tip today was set intentions at the beginning of your sessions second.
00:21:03 Joanna Lindenbaum
Hip activate the somatic level. Third tip, consult less Co. Strategize more if you got value from today’s episode and you know that you want to level up your transformational skills even more so that you can support your clients to better results.
00:21:23 Joanna Lindenbaum
And so that you also don’t get caught like a deer in headlights when clients get stuck. Whether it’s because of a fear or a belief or any kind of pattern or circuit.
00:21:35 Joanna Lindenbaum
Stamps. And if you know you’re ready to go deeper in your client, work to use somatic techniques to work with shadow and archetype and so much more sacred depths really is the place for you.
