Being Visible in Your Marketing When You Don’t Love How You Look or Sound

Joannaig Square@2x

What do you do when you know visibility matters in your marketing…
but you don’t like how you look in photos,
or how your face shows up on camera,
or how your voice sounds when you hear it played back?

In today’s episode of the Coaching Revolution Podcast, Joanna speaks to a tender and deeply human struggle that many coaches and practitioners carry quietly: how to be visible in your marketing when you feel self-conscious about your appearance or your voice.

This episode is especially for coaches, therapists, and heart-centered entrepreneurs who know that being seen and heard builds trust—but who feel resistance, fear, or vulnerability around showing their face, recording videos, or hearing their own voice.

Joanna shares personal stories about body image, aging, cultural conditioning, Bell’s palsy, and being criticized for the sound of her voice—along with compassionate guidance for navigating visibility without forcing confidence or performing a persona.

This is not an episode about polishing yourself or becoming more “camera-ready.”
It’s about willingness, humanity, and allowing yourself to be seen as you actually are.

In this episode, we explore:

  • Why visibility matters for trust, connection, and ethical marketing
  • The role of photos, video, and voice in know-like-trust for coaches
  • How to be visible in your marketing when you don’t like how you look
  • Making peace with your voice—even if you’ve been judged or criticized
  • Body image, aging, and cultural messages that shape self-judgment
  • Why visibility doesn’t mean performing or turning yourself into a brand
  • The “spotlight effect” and why others notice your perceived flaws far less than you do
  • Why perfection doesn’t create safety—humanity does
  • How to work with fear of criticism and “haters” without shutting down
  • Shifting from confidence to willingness as a sustainable way to show up

If this episode resonated, I’d love to hear from you—send me a note or share what landed.

Share this episode with a friend or colleague who might be struggling with visibility or self-judgment—they may feel deeply seen.

00:00:55 Joanna Lindenbaum
Let’s get started.
00:01:01 Joanna Lindenbaum
Welcome back to the Coaching Revolution Podcast.
00:01:04 Joanna Lindenbaum
This is Joanna Lindenbaum, and I am so happy that you’re here with me today.
00:01:10 Joanna Lindenbaum
Thank you for making the time.
00:01:14 Joanna Lindenbaum
And real quick, before we dive into today’s episode, I wanted to let you know that twice in the month of February, I am going to be holding a very special and free masterclass.
00:01:29 Joanna Lindenbaum
It’s called How to Help Your Clients Off of the Wheel of Self-Sabotage.
00:01:34 Joanna Lindenbaum
And it is 90 minutes of pure gold content and also deep inner experience for you.
00:01:44 Joanna Lindenbaum
So if you have clients who are getting in a stuck of pattern of not taking action, or if you have clients who get stuck in a pattern of holding themselves back, or they just do things that kind of don’t make sense, that end up working against them, even though your clients know better,
00:02:09 Joanna Lindenbaum
this masterclass is for you.
00:02:11 Joanna Lindenbaum
I’m going to be teaching a coaching framework so that you can understand the human behavior behind self-sabotage, how it works in cycles, and then how and where to break those cycles.
00:02:26 Joanna Lindenbaum
It’s also really helpful if you know that you tend to self-sabotage as well.
00:02:33 Joanna Lindenbaum
So I’ll drop
00:02:35 Joanna Lindenbaum
a link for the masterclass in the show notes, and I really hope that you join us.
00:02:42 Joanna Lindenbaum
Now, today’s episode is on a really important topic, and I’ll say it’s a very personal and tender topic as well.
00:02:55 Joanna Lindenbaum
It’s one that I’ve struggled with myself over the years, numerous times,
00:03:03 Joanna Lindenbaum
And it’s something that I’ve supported a lot of my clients with over the years.
00:03:09 Joanna Lindenbaum
It’s a topic that really isn’t talked about very much because I don’t think that most people really know how to approach this.
00:03:18 Joanna Lindenbaum
And the topic that I’m talking about is how to be visible in your marketing when you don’t really love either how you look or how your voice sounds
00:03:31 Joanna Lindenbaum
or in my case, both.
00:03:33 Joanna Lindenbaum
So I think it goes without saying that it’s really important to have photos of us and sometimes videos of ourselves in our marketing, especially in today’s environment.
00:03:53 Joanna Lindenbaum
It’s important to have photos and videos so that people can get to know us.
00:04:00 Joanna Lindenbaum
so that they can get to know what we look like, so that they can get to know how we speak and how we sound, so they can hear us.
00:04:10 Joanna Lindenbaum
Because when people see us and hear us, they get a better sense of our energy.
00:04:18 Joanna Lindenbaum
And this really matters when it comes to sales, when it comes to bringing people into our offerings.
00:04:29 Joanna Lindenbaum
It matters because when the people that we are meant to impact can see us and hear us, it activates the know, like, and trust factor.
00:04:43 Joanna Lindenbaum
And all three of those things, knowing us, liking us, and trusting us, are huge.
00:04:54 Joanna Lindenbaum
And I think trust is the biggest.
00:04:57 Joanna Lindenbaum
Trust is a key component to a prospect deciding whether to buy from us, work from us, join a program, or even whether to simply show up for a free preview class.
00:05:12 Joanna Lindenbaum
Because even showing up for a free preview class, that is somebody deciding to invest their time and energy into something that we have to offer.
00:05:23 Joanna Lindenbaum
They need to trust us.
00:05:26 Joanna Lindenbaum
People often need to feel like, oh, I relate to this person, or she feels like my kind of person, or I like her vibe, or I trust her energy in order to be willing to invest time, money, and energy into us.
00:05:47 Joanna Lindenbaum
And let me say, if you know me, you know this.
00:05:52 Joanna Lindenbaum
I am a word person.
00:05:55 Joanna Lindenbaum
I like my written words.
00:05:57 Joanna Lindenbaum
And so it kind of hurts to say we also need to be sharing photos, videos, audio, because I don’t like it all the time.
00:06:12 Joanna Lindenbaum
I sometimes find it inconvenient and I find it hard.
00:06:16 Joanna Lindenbaum
But
00:06:17 Joanna Lindenbaum
It’s also really hard for people to be able to get to know us more deeply, again, to know, like, and trust us from our copy alone.
00:06:32 Joanna Lindenbaum
So if you’ve been holding back from having photos of yourself on your website or on your sales pages or on your opt-in pages or on your social media, or if you’ve been holding back from video in certain places where you’re messaging, where you’re marketing, I really want to encourage you to consider being a little more visible in these ways.
00:07:00 Joanna Lindenbaum
And I want to say this too.
00:07:03 Joanna Lindenbaum
You don’t have to go overboard.
00:07:06 Joanna Lindenbaum
It can be balanced.
00:07:09 Joanna Lindenbaum
In other words…
00:07:10 Joanna Lindenbaum
You don’t have to go hog wild with a bazillion pictures and videos.
00:07:15 Joanna Lindenbaum
Now, I know that there are a lot of social media influencers and coaches out there where their whole brand is basically their face or their really chiseled bodies.
00:07:33 Joanna Lindenbaum
And their brand is very centered on their appearance.
00:07:36 Joanna Lindenbaum
They’ve got tons of glossy photos,
00:07:40 Joanna Lindenbaum
where they are in fabulous and premium locations that are supposed to show their wealth.
00:07:47 Joanna Lindenbaum
And they’ve got lots of videos of themselves with a ton of makeup on or their hair very coiffed or wearing very fancy clothing.
00:07:57 Joanna Lindenbaum
And so much of the marketing and the branding is very centered on how they look and their beauty.
00:08:05 Joanna Lindenbaum
And oftentimes their youth
00:08:08 Joanna Lindenbaum
or a projection of themselves as stress-free and living their best lives, and also sometimes maybe with a tinge of sexiness.
00:08:19 Joanna Lindenbaum
Now, I am not– I want to be clear– I am not judging any of that at all.
00:08:27 Joanna Lindenbaum
That is absolutely what is right for some people and some brands.
00:08:36 Joanna Lindenbaum
And that being said, I also know that’s not for me.
00:08:44 Joanna Lindenbaum
And if it’s not for you, again, that’s OK.
00:08:50 Joanna Lindenbaum
So even if we kind of put aside for a moment my stuff around how I look or how I sound, which I’ll get to in a few minutes,
00:09:02 Joanna Lindenbaum
It’s just really not my style to center my marketing on my face and my appearance.
00:09:11 Joanna Lindenbaum
I don’t want a million photos of myself everywhere.
00:09:15 Joanna Lindenbaum
Like I said, I really like my written words.
00:09:18 Joanna Lindenbaum
I have so many words.
00:09:20 Joanna Lindenbaum
And that is okay.
00:09:21 Joanna Lindenbaum
It’s okay to be balanced with this.
00:09:24 Joanna Lindenbaum
It’s okay if every single post isn’t a picture of you.
00:09:29 Joanna Lindenbaum
It’s okay if your homepage doesn’t have five photos of your face.
00:09:35 Joanna Lindenbaum
There are so many ways to be visible.
00:09:39 Joanna Lindenbaum
Also, it doesn’t have to be an Instagram reel.
00:09:43 Joanna Lindenbaum
I don’t even really know how to do Instagram.
00:09:47 Joanna Lindenbaum
And my business is still surviving.
00:09:49 Joanna Lindenbaum
You know, it could be a few photos on your website.
00:09:52 Joanna Lindenbaum
It could be a podcast like this where people get to hear your voice.
00:09:57 Joanna Lindenbaum
It could be an occasional short video.
00:10:00 Joanna Lindenbaum
You get to choose the forms of visibility that feel right for you.
00:10:08 Joanna Lindenbaum
And I also want to say this.
00:10:12 Joanna Lindenbaum
Being visible doesn’t mean that you have to perform.
00:10:16 Joanna Lindenbaum
It doesn’t mean turning yourself into a brand or putting on a persona.
00:10:23 Joanna Lindenbaum
For me, visibility is about allowing myself to be seen as I actually am, and not as some polished version that I think culture tells me I’m supposed to be.
00:10:38 Joanna Lindenbaum
So all that being said, though, we do still have to come back to the know, like, and trust factor.
00:10:53 Joanna Lindenbaum
Even if you’re not plastering pictures of yourself all over the place, you do have to make yourself visible, not just your ideas, not just your words, but your face and your voice sometimes.
00:11:11 Joanna Lindenbaum
Again, it’s part of what’s often needed for people to be willing to take the next steps with you.
00:11:19 Joanna Lindenbaum
That’s really just the reality of marketing in 2026.
00:11:24 Joanna Lindenbaum
And honestly, it’s been like that for a while now.
00:11:27 Joanna Lindenbaum
I wish it wasn’t so, but it is what it is.
00:11:31 Joanna Lindenbaum
I don’t like the hassle.
00:11:33 Joanna Lindenbaum
I’m not someone who takes a lot of selfies of myself to begin with.
00:11:38 Joanna Lindenbaum
All the things.
00:11:41 Joanna Lindenbaum
But the other reason why
00:11:45 Joanna Lindenbaum
I wish this wasn’t so.
00:11:46 Joanna Lindenbaum
I wish we didn’t have to put out photos and videos.
00:11:52 Joanna Lindenbaum
And this is where we get into the heart of today’s episode, is because I haven’t always loved how I look.
00:12:01 Joanna Lindenbaum
And I haven’t always loved how I sound.
00:12:05 Joanna Lindenbaum
And I’ve worked on it a lot over the years, and I’ve moved forward on it a lot.
00:12:12 Joanna Lindenbaum
There’s been a lot of transformation for me on this.
00:12:16 Joanna Lindenbaum
But the truth is that there are still vestiges of this for me.
00:12:21 Joanna Lindenbaum
There are still times that I don’t like how I look or how I sound.
00:12:30 Joanna Lindenbaum
I’m
00:12:31 Joanna Lindenbaum
I haven’t always wanted to post photos or videos of myself because of this.
00:12:38 Joanna Lindenbaum
Because I don’t want to be judged for how I look or how I sound.
00:12:43 Joanna Lindenbaum
I don’t want people to be critical of those things.
00:12:48 Joanna Lindenbaum
And there’s so much that I could share around my own experiences with this.
00:12:55 Joanna Lindenbaum
I mean, I could write a book just on this topic.
00:13:02 Joanna Lindenbaum
But for today’s episode, I want to share just enough so that I can normalize all of this for you, so that I can let you know you’re not alone if this is something that you struggle with as well in your own way.
00:13:20 Joanna Lindenbaum
And then in today’s episode, I’m also going to be sharing different ways forward with this.
00:13:28 Joanna Lindenbaum
So if
00:13:30 Joanna Lindenbaum
being visible because of how you feel about your appearance or how you sound is something that you struggle with, I’m going to be giving you some tips for this.
00:13:42 Joanna Lindenbaum
So ever since I can remember, I have been internally critical in one way or another about my physical appearance.
00:13:55 Joanna Lindenbaum
When I was much younger, it was often about the shape of my body.
00:14:02 Joanna Lindenbaum
And at different times in my life, it’s been about my face or about my hair, or just in general, I’m not pretty enough, or I’m not beautiful enough, or I look strange.
00:14:15 Joanna Lindenbaum
Now, while some of that comes from my family of origin,
00:14:22 Joanna Lindenbaum
Of course, a lot of it also comes from cultural messaging, especially for women, around what beauty is supposed to look like, what a beautiful woman is supposed to look like.
00:14:38 Joanna Lindenbaum
And we all also know that the roots of so much of this cultural messaging are fueled by advanced capitalism.
00:14:49 Joanna Lindenbaum
In other words,
00:14:50 Joanna Lindenbaum
if we don’t feel great about the way that we look, then we’re going to buy more products to try and look better, right?
00:14:59 Joanna Lindenbaum
This is the whole point of the messaging.
00:15:03 Joanna Lindenbaum
And over the years, I’ve had to do a lot of internal work around undoing those cultural messages, the ones that tell me that how I look isn’t okay.
00:15:19 Joanna Lindenbaum
So I’ve had the stuff from my family of origin.
00:15:22 Joanna Lindenbaum
I have the cultural messaging, which we all have.
00:15:27 Joanna Lindenbaum
But then I’ve had some other things that have contributed to how I feel about my appearance.
00:15:32 Joanna Lindenbaum
So some of you may know that in my late 20s, I woke up one day, I was living on the Upper East Side in New York City, and I woke up one day and
00:15:48 Joanna Lindenbaum
Half of my face was sagging.
00:15:52 Joanna Lindenbaum
And after much confusion, I went to the doctor.
00:15:59 Joanna Lindenbaum
I figured out that I had Bell’s palsy.
00:16:02 Joanna Lindenbaum
And for quite a number of months, the left side of my face was completely uneven and mismatched with the right side of my face.
00:16:18 Joanna Lindenbaum
And it’s been a long time since the Bell’s palsy.
00:16:22 Joanna Lindenbaum
And even though my face has, I don’t know, I’d say 99% recovered since then, I will say that sometimes the Bell’s palsy still shows up subtly.
00:16:39 Joanna Lindenbaum
And you can see that the left side of my face is uneven compared to the right side of my face.
00:16:47 Joanna Lindenbaum
This shows up especially in videos and sometimes in pictures of me.
00:16:53 Joanna Lindenbaum
I know something about the speed of videos.
00:16:57 Joanna Lindenbaum
You can see the Bell’s palsy, the vestiges of it a little bit more, or especially if I’m tired on a particular day, right?
00:17:05 Joanna Lindenbaum
So this is something about my appearance that has bothered me for a long time.
00:17:10 Joanna Lindenbaum
And not so much anymore these days, but it still comes up.
00:17:14 Joanna Lindenbaum
And what I will say is also that these days, when I’m feeling not so confident about how I look, it often has to do with my relationship with my appearance as I’m getting older.
00:17:33 Joanna Lindenbaum
I’m 50.
00:17:35 Joanna Lindenbaum
I’m getting older.
00:17:37 Joanna Lindenbaum
I haven’t had…
00:17:39 Joanna Lindenbaum
any of the processes like work done or anything like that.
00:17:44 Joanna Lindenbaum
So I’m getting wrinkles.
00:17:46 Joanna Lindenbaum
I definitely have gray hairs.
00:17:50 Joanna Lindenbaum
And I sometimes look tired, even when I’m not feeling tired at all.
00:17:54 Joanna Lindenbaum
I remember.
00:17:56 Joanna Lindenbaum
in my early 40s thinking, I must be really tired today because I look really tired.
00:18:01 Joanna Lindenbaum
But then somewhere in my mid 40s, I figured out like, nope, that’s not tired.
00:18:06 Joanna Lindenbaum
It’s just how I look now.
00:18:09 Joanna Lindenbaum
So of course, the relationship with aging, I think especially for women also has to do with culture, right?
00:18:19 Joanna Lindenbaum
And culture, not honoring or valuing
00:18:24 Joanna Lindenbaum
older women, older women being invisible in culture.
00:18:30 Joanna Lindenbaum
We’re considered past our prime.
00:18:32 Joanna Lindenbaum
You know, we’re not held up as images of beauty.
00:18:38 Joanna Lindenbaum
And of course, I try not to fall into any of those traps.
00:18:44 Joanna Lindenbaum
I think I do pretty well at it a lot of the time, but it can be tempting sometimes.
00:18:50 Joanna Lindenbaum
And I do fall into those traps sometimes.
00:18:55 Joanna Lindenbaum
So all of this is to say that I’ve done a lot of inner work around my appearance all through the years, through many decades.
00:19:09 Joanna Lindenbaum
And there are many, many parts of me that feel beautiful, that know I’m attractive, that know I look OK, whatever even all of that means.
00:19:24 Joanna Lindenbaum
And I also know that my essence and my radiance is what comes through most powerfully, right, more powerfully than any of the features on my face or what my body looks like.
00:19:40 Joanna Lindenbaum
But I’ll be honest, at the same time, there are still parts of me that worry, what will people think when they see me?
00:19:53 Joanna Lindenbaum
So both exist.
00:19:56 Joanna Lindenbaum
Both exist inside of me, the parts that feel beautiful and the parts that don’t really always love how I look.
00:20:04 Joanna Lindenbaum
So if this is you as well, please, know that it’s normal.
00:20:11 Joanna Lindenbaum
Please know that there’s nothing wrong with you.
00:20:15 Joanna Lindenbaum
And please know that it doesn’t mean that you haven’t done enough work or you’re not evolved enough.
00:20:22 Joanna Lindenbaum
if you’ve got some stuff around your appearance.
00:20:24 Joanna Lindenbaum
Because again, we’re all fighting cultural messaging here, and it’s so pervasive.
00:20:31 Joanna Lindenbaum
It’s so much, right?
00:20:33 Joanna Lindenbaum
It takes a lot of work.
00:20:37 Joanna Lindenbaum
Now, I’ve got a little bit of a double whammy, because not only do I sometimes have stuff come up around how I look, but I also have some stuff around the sound of my voice.
00:20:52 Joanna Lindenbaum
So I grew up in a household with two immigrants as parents from two different places.
00:21:01 Joanna Lindenbaum
There were a lot of accents in my household, a lot of languages, a lot of accents.
00:21:07 Joanna Lindenbaum
And my speaking voice and the intonations I use and the rhythm of my speaking and the way that I enunciate certain words
00:21:17 Joanna Lindenbaum
it all got shaped by those varying accents and languages that I grew up with.
00:21:24 Joanna Lindenbaum
And then in addition to that, I’m kind of a slow talker.
00:21:31 Joanna Lindenbaum
So when you put all of these things together, I don’t know, I think I kind of have a strange way of speaking.
00:21:38 Joanna Lindenbaum
And, you know, I don’t only think it’s what I think,
00:21:44 Joanna Lindenbaum
A couple decades ago, someone approached me and said, oh, you have so many smart things to say.
00:21:51 Joanna Lindenbaum
You have so much wisdom, but maybe you want to work on your voice a little bit.
00:21:57 Joanna Lindenbaum
So anyway, I also do know that there are people that love the sound of my voice and the rhythm of it.
00:22:07 Joanna Lindenbaum
I know both exist.
00:22:09 Joanna Lindenbaum
There are people that don’t love the sound of my voice.
00:22:12 Joanna Lindenbaum
And I’ve had so many clients and students tell me they love the way that I speak.
00:22:20 Joanna Lindenbaum
So years ago, about 10.
00:22:25 Joanna Lindenbaum
years ago, this kind of feeling of, my voice is not that great.
00:22:34 Joanna Lindenbaum
All of this got reinforced in a really painful way.
00:22:38 Joanna Lindenbaum
So the short story is that about 10 years ago, I led
00:22:46 Joanna Lindenbaum
an online workshop.
00:22:47 Joanna Lindenbaum
And this was before the days of Zoom, by the way.
00:22:50 Joanna Lindenbaum
This was on a phone line, on a bridge line.
00:22:53 Joanna Lindenbaum
So nobody could see me.
00:22:55 Joanna Lindenbaum
They could only hear the sound of my voice.
00:22:59 Joanna Lindenbaum
This is real old school.
00:23:01 Joanna Lindenbaum
So about 10 years ago, I led an online workshop.
00:23:05 Joanna Lindenbaum
It had hundreds of people that attended.
00:23:09 Joanna Lindenbaum
And the content that I was sharing in this workshop, where people could just only hear me, not see me, it was pretty edgy.
00:23:18 Joanna Lindenbaum
And we went pretty deep.
00:23:23 Joanna Lindenbaum
And anyway, I finished the workshop.
00:23:26 Joanna Lindenbaum
It was the end of my day.
00:23:29 Joanna Lindenbaum
And
00:23:30 Joanna Lindenbaum
I was driving in the evening to my daughter’s preschool at the time.
00:23:37 Joanna Lindenbaum
I was on the board at the preschool and we had a meeting.
00:23:43 Joanna Lindenbaum
And this was back in the days where I still had e-mail on my phone.
00:23:48 Joanna Lindenbaum
I haven’t had e-mail or social media on my phone.
00:23:52 Joanna Lindenbaum
for a long time now because it’s distracting, it wastes a lot of time.
00:23:57 Joanna Lindenbaum
That’s a topic for another podcast episode.
00:24:00 Joanna Lindenbaum
But anyway, I had e-mail on my phone at the time and I parked at my daughter’s.
00:24:08 Joanna Lindenbaum
preschool and I was sitting in my car in the parking lot and I checked my e-mail because in that workshop earlier in the day, I had made an invitation into one of my programs.
00:24:20 Joanna Lindenbaum
I wanted to see updated sales, et cetera.
00:24:25 Joanna Lindenbaum
And I see in my inbox, there is an e-mail that my team forwarded to me that got sent to our info line.
00:24:37 Joanna Lindenbaum
And I read the e-mail, and it was from someone who I didn’t know, but who had attended the workshop.
00:24:46 Joanna Lindenbaum
And it went on and on and on, not critiquing the content of the workshop, but attacking the sound of my voice.
00:25:00 Joanna Lindenbaum
She wrote in 10 different ways about how annoying my voice was, how she could barely stand it, how upsetting it was to her.
00:25:11 Joanna Lindenbaum
And here’s the kicker.
00:25:13 Joanna Lindenbaum
She included inside of this e-mail that she was a voice coach.
00:25:19 Joanna Lindenbaum
So anyway, I’m reading this e-mail in the parking lot.
00:25:28 Joanna Lindenbaum
of the preschool before the board meeting.
00:25:31 Joanna Lindenbaum
And it sent my entire nervous system into a berserk state.
00:25:39 Joanna Lindenbaum
I mean, I just, I felt like I was having, heart palpitations.
00:25:47 Joanna Lindenbaum
I was feeling dizzy.
00:25:50 Joanna Lindenbaum
I just felt
00:25:52 Joanna Lindenbaum
so attacked and so ashamed and just so upset and critical of myself.
00:26:02 Joanna Lindenbaum
I tried to get myself together.
00:26:05 Joanna Lindenbaum
I went into the board meeting.
00:26:08 Joanna Lindenbaum
I lasted about 5 minutes before I just burst out crying inside of the board meeting.
00:26:16 Joanna Lindenbaum
And I just had to run out of there.
00:26:18 Joanna Lindenbaum
I had to leave.
00:26:20 Joanna Lindenbaum
I drove home crying hysterically, and it took me a full day to recover.
00:26:27 Joanna Lindenbaum
I mean, I took it hard.
00:26:31 Joanna Lindenbaum
So anyway, all of this, again, is to say I’ve got stuff.
00:26:36 Joanna Lindenbaum
I’ve got stuff around the sound of my voice.
00:26:40 Joanna Lindenbaum
I know what it’s like to be criticized for the sound of my voice.
00:26:45 Joanna Lindenbaum
And if you have stuff to
00:26:49 Joanna Lindenbaum
Here’s what I want to tell you.
00:26:51 Joanna Lindenbaum
It’s okay.
00:26:53 Joanna Lindenbaum
It’s okay.
00:26:54 Joanna Lindenbaum
And even if you don’t love how you look or how you sound, you can still make yourself visible.
00:27:07 Joanna Lindenbaum
Again, I’m sharing all of this to normalize it for you.
00:27:11 Joanna Lindenbaum
to let you know you’re not alone, there’s nothing wrong with you, and also to encourage you to make yourself visible anyway, if you are able to.
00:27:24 Joanna Lindenbaum
Because again, even with all of this, being visible, sharing some photos, sharing videos, et cetera, it really does make a difference for your marketing.
00:27:35 Joanna Lindenbaum
So then the question becomes how?
00:27:37 Joanna Lindenbaum
How do you make your image and your voice visible, even if you’ve got stuff around it?
00:27:47 Joanna Lindenbaum
I’m gonna share a couple of, I don’t know, I guess the right word is tips, a couple of things that have really, really helped me and my clients that I’ve supported with this.
00:28:01 Joanna Lindenbaum
So first and foremost, the first thing is inner work, always inner work.
00:28:07 Joanna Lindenbaum
the inner work around your fears and your limiting beliefs and the fears of rejection and criticism.
00:28:17 Joanna Lindenbaum
So I personally am continually doing inner work around undoing patriarchal and advanced capitalist beliefs, around
00:28:31 Joanna Lindenbaum
undoing the fears and ideas embedded from my family of origin, undoing the messages that say I have to look polished or perfect or young, undoing the messages inside of me that says textured hair isn’t as beautiful as smooth hair, right?
00:28:53 Joanna Lindenbaum
All the things.
00:28:54 Joanna Lindenbaum
Undoing the internal messages that say I need to sound a certain way or else people won’t like me.
00:29:01 Joanna Lindenbaum
I kind of feel like the inner work is never really done, right?
00:29:07 Joanna Lindenbaum
So this isn’t about getting it all done before you can be visible.
00:29:13 Joanna Lindenbaum
It’s, but it is about continuing to come back to the work and come back to the inner work.
00:29:24 Joanna Lindenbaum
This is one of the reasons why inside of sacred depths, we take so much time to learn techniques and somatic techniques like the befriend your fear technique or the rewiring unhelpful belief techniques or looking at resistance archetypes, et cetera, et cetera.
00:29:46 Joanna Lindenbaum
It’s so key to so much.
00:29:49 Joanna Lindenbaum
So that’s number one, do your inner work.
00:29:52 Joanna Lindenbaum
And the second thing that can really help with all of this is remembering the spotlight effect.
00:30:02 Joanna Lindenbaum
So the spotlight effect basically goes like this.
00:30:07 Joanna Lindenbaum
We notice ourselves way more than anyone else does.
00:30:13 Joanna Lindenbaum
And that’s because everybody else is mostly focused on themselves and worrying about their own flaws or worrying about what other people think of them.
00:30:22 Joanna Lindenbaum
They’re so focused on that, they really don’t have that much time, energy, space left over to focus on us and the details of us.
00:30:34 Joanna Lindenbaum
So I’m probably
00:30:37 Joanna Lindenbaum
the only person or one of the few people who notice the remnants of the Bell’s palsy on my face, unless I point it out.
00:30:48 Joanna Lindenbaum
And even if other people do notice it on me, they don’t care.
00:30:53 Joanna Lindenbaum
They don’t nearly care as much as I do at all, right?
00:30:57 Joanna Lindenbaum
So I want you to remember the spotlight effect and whatever…
00:31:02 Joanna Lindenbaum
little criticisms you might have around your appearance or your body or your voice, it’s sticking out to you way more than it sticks out to anyone else.
00:31:16 Joanna Lindenbaum
It probably looks totally normal to everyone else.
00:31:21 Joanna Lindenbaum
Okay.
00:31:22 Joanna Lindenbaum
The third piece to remember that I think can really help
00:31:27 Joanna Lindenbaum
when it comes to being visible, even if we don’t love how we look or sound, is to poke holes in what I call the myth of perfection, right?
00:31:39 Joanna Lindenbaum
The myth of perfection is the idea that somehow we all think we have to be perfect and look perfect.
00:31:47 Joanna Lindenbaum
And of course, again, all of this goes back to this cultural messaging that just helps us buy more things.
00:31:57 Joanna Lindenbaum
right?
00:31:57 Joanna Lindenbaum
But wait, remember, you don’t have to be perfect.
00:32:01 Joanna Lindenbaum
That’s not what’s going to sell.
00:32:06 Joanna Lindenbaum
So I’m messy.
00:32:09 Joanna Lindenbaum
My hair is wild.
00:32:11 Joanna Lindenbaum
I don’t really know how to put on makeup.
00:32:15 Joanna Lindenbaum
I am definitely rough around the edges.
00:32:21 Joanna Lindenbaum
I am so not perfect looking in any way.
00:32:27 Joanna Lindenbaum
But all of those imperfections, I have a feeling that that’s what so many of my clients, that’s one of the things that so many of my clients love about me.
00:32:38 Joanna Lindenbaum
I don’t think my clients and my future clients are looking for perfect and glossy in me.
00:32:46 Joanna Lindenbaum
And in fact, my roughness around the edges, my imperfections, it’s a value add
00:32:55 Joanna Lindenbaum
for my clients and for the people in my community.
00:32:57 Joanna Lindenbaum
Maybe it is for you as you’ve been listening to this episode or to this podcast, right?
00:33:03 Joanna Lindenbaum
Because when you see that I’m messy, when you see that I’m not perfect, it hopefully helps you accept more of your own imperfections, your own roughness around the edges.
00:33:20 Joanna Lindenbaum
So
00:33:21 Joanna Lindenbaum
It’s really more than OK to not be perfect.
00:33:27 Joanna Lindenbaum
Perfection is– I don’t think perfection is what helps fuel a business.
00:33:36 Joanna Lindenbaum
Humanity is what fuels a business.
00:33:40 Joanna Lindenbaum
And also, it helps you be a better practitioner.
00:33:45 Joanna Lindenbaum
OK, the next tip or piece
00:33:49 Joanna Lindenbaum
that I want to share around this lovingly is there are going to be some haters.
00:34:02 Joanna Lindenbaum
I wish I could pinky promise you that there’s going to be nobody out there that judges how you look or how you sound or what you talk about or whatever it is.
00:34:17 Joanna Lindenbaum
I wish, I wish I could tell you that, but I can’t.
00:34:21 Joanna Lindenbaum
That would be a lie.
00:34:23 Joanna Lindenbaum
They’re gonna be haters and that’s part of visibility.
00:34:31 Joanna Lindenbaum
And my, I don’t know, my recommendation to you, I know it’s easier than it sounds,
00:34:41 Joanna Lindenbaum
But my recommendation to you is to, you know, excuse my language, but to kind of say F it to the haters, like to know that they’re going to be there sometimes and that you’re stronger than that.
00:34:57 Joanna Lindenbaum
So, you know, I told you the story about my voice and that e-mail and I got through it, right?
00:35:05 Joanna Lindenbaum
I’m still here.
00:35:06 Joanna Lindenbaum
My business is super strong.
00:35:08 Joanna Lindenbaum
I’ve survived.
00:35:10 Joanna Lindenbaum
I could share another story a number of years ago because I don’t like doing video for all of the reasons we’ve been talking about.
00:35:19 Joanna Lindenbaum
But I was like, I really, I want to push myself.
00:35:21 Joanna Lindenbaum
I want to do a video.
00:35:22 Joanna Lindenbaum
I had just been working out.
00:35:25 Joanna Lindenbaum
I was in workout clothes.
00:35:27 Joanna Lindenbaum
I wasn’t wearing makeup.
00:35:28 Joanna Lindenbaum
I was a little sweaty.
00:35:30 Joanna Lindenbaum
And I just said, that’s it.
00:35:31 Joanna Lindenbaum
I’m not going to get dressed up.
00:35:33 Joanna Lindenbaum
I’m going to just make the video like this, a little sweaty.
00:35:37 Joanna Lindenbaum
And I made a video.
00:35:38 Joanna Lindenbaum
I forget what the topic was, but it went deep.
00:35:41 Joanna Lindenbaum
I posted it on social media.
00:35:43 Joanna Lindenbaum
So many people loved it.
00:35:45 Joanna Lindenbaum
They got so much value from it.
00:35:47 Joanna Lindenbaum
They commented on the video.
00:35:50 Joanna Lindenbaum
But there was one person, a hater,
00:35:55 Joanna Lindenbaum
who in the comments, she went off about my workout clothing.
00:36:01 Joanna Lindenbaum
I guess I was showing a little bit of cleavage.
00:36:04 Joanna Lindenbaum
I hadn’t even realized.
00:36:06 Joanna Lindenbaum
It wasn’t too much.
00:36:06 Joanna Lindenbaum
It was just like, you know, a tank top with a sports bra underneath.
00:36:10 Joanna Lindenbaum
But she just said I was unprofessional and this and that and the other thing.
00:36:17 Joanna Lindenbaum
And
00:36:19 Joanna Lindenbaum
there were so many comments on that video that were so positive, that were so appreciative of the video and of what I was sharing.
00:36:27 Joanna Lindenbaum
And of course, that one comment, the one that was critical, it stung.
00:36:34 Joanna Lindenbaum
And I did feel some shame, but I’ll tell you just for a moment, just for a moment, because after a moment, I remembered, you know what?
00:36:47 Joanna Lindenbaum
I’m not for everyone.
00:36:49 Joanna Lindenbaum
And that is a good thing.
00:36:52 Joanna Lindenbaum
We’re not supposed to be for everyone.
00:36:55 Joanna Lindenbaum
So we can survive criticism.
00:37:01 Joanna Lindenbaum
We can survive haters.
00:37:03 Joanna Lindenbaum
It’s not going to take down our business.
00:37:08 Joanna Lindenbaum
So the fifth tip that
00:37:13 Joanna Lindenbaum
can really help you make yourself be more visible, even if you don’t like how you look or sound, is to remember your why.
00:37:27 Joanna Lindenbaum
W-H-Y is to remember your why.
00:37:30 Joanna Lindenbaum
Why are you posting this picture?
00:37:33 Joanna Lindenbaum
Why are you posting this video?
00:37:36 Joanna Lindenbaum
Why are you sharing the sound of your voice and your marketing?
00:37:42 Joanna Lindenbaum
So it is really helpful to me to remember that I’m not making myself visible in order to get validation.
00:37:54 Joanna Lindenbaum
And I’m not making myself visible just for visibility’s sake.
00:38:00 Joanna Lindenbaum
And I’m not making myself visible because I need accolades around how I look or how I sound.
00:38:08 Joanna Lindenbaum
No.
00:38:10 Joanna Lindenbaum
I am doing it.
00:38:11 Joanna Lindenbaum
I am making myself visible.
00:38:13 Joanna Lindenbaum
I am being courageous and showing my face and sharing the sound of my voice so that the people I’m meant to help can find me and trust me and say yes, so that I can help them, so that I can make impact.
00:38:35 Joanna Lindenbaum
in their lives so that I can fulfill my sacred mission.
00:38:41 Joanna Lindenbaum
This is so much bigger than how I look and so much bigger than how I sound, and it is compelling enough for me to be willing to share myself.
00:38:53 Joanna Lindenbaum
So instead of asking yourself, do I look good or bad, or do I sound good or bad?
00:39:03 Joanna Lindenbaum
which by the way, both of those are such binaries.
00:39:06 Joanna Lindenbaum
They don’t leave space, right, for real life.
00:39:09 Joanna Lindenbaum
But instead, here’s what I ask myself.
00:39:14 Joanna Lindenbaum
When people see a picture of me or watch a video of me, what do I want people to feel about me?
00:39:24 Joanna Lindenbaum
What do I want them to sense about my energy?
00:39:30 Joanna Lindenbaum
What do
00:39:31 Joanna Lindenbaum
I want them to understand about who I am and my values and what I’m about.
00:39:42 Joanna Lindenbaum
And even more importantly, how do I want them to feel in my presence?
00:39:53 Joanna Lindenbaum
What do I want my visual presence or my oral presence
00:39:59 Joanna Lindenbaum
to inspire inside of them.
00:40:05 Joanna Lindenbaum
Whatever those answers are for you, forget about the outer details of your face or how you sound, and instead infuse those energies into your smile, into your facial expression,
00:40:30 Joanna Lindenbaum
into your body language, into your voice.
00:40:35 Joanna Lindenbaum
That’s what’s most important at the end of the day.
00:40:40 Joanna Lindenbaum
I know for me, whether someone sees me or hears me, what I want is for them to feel a sense of safety, for them to feel a warm welcome, like they belong.
00:40:57 Joanna Lindenbaum
They
00:40:58 Joanna Lindenbaum
matter.
00:41:01 Joanna Lindenbaum
I want them to feel self-acceptance or love, and I want them to feel inspired.
00:41:11 Joanna Lindenbaum
That’s what matters.
00:41:13 Joanna Lindenbaum
That’s what compels me to share photos and videos, even when I don’t love how I look.
00:41:25 Joanna Lindenbaum
And I think just the last piece for today’s episode that’s important to say is that I don’t wait until I feel fully confident.
00:41:43 Joanna Lindenbaum
If I waited until I felt fully, fully, fully, fully confident in how I look or how I sound, then I’d still be waiting.
00:41:50 Joanna Lindenbaum
I would not do the things.
00:41:56 Joanna Lindenbaum
A lot of the time, the confidence comes after you show up, not before.
00:42:05 Joanna Lindenbaum
Okay, my friend, I hope that you got exactly what you needed from today’s episode.
00:42:11 Joanna Lindenbaum
And if you take nothing else from today’s episode, I hope that you take this.
00:42:18 Joanna Lindenbaum
You don’t need to be more polished.
00:42:22 Joanna Lindenbaum
You don’t need to be more attractive, whatever that means.
00:42:28 Joanna Lindenbaum
You don’t need to sound different.
00:42:30 Joanna Lindenbaum
You don’t need to be more anything in order to be worthy of being seen.
00:42:39 Joanna Lindenbaum
You are already worthy.
00:42:44 Joanna Lindenbaum
So as always, I would love to hear from you if this episode resonated.
00:42:51 Joanna Lindenbaum
Let me know what it sparked for you.
00:42:53 Joanna Lindenbaum
Let me know what ideas and feelings came up.
00:42:57 Joanna Lindenbaum
I really, really want to hear.
00:42:59 Joanna Lindenbaum
I always will write back, read everything personally and write back personally.
00:43:07 Joanna Lindenbaum
I also want to remind you that we are moving firmly into
00:43:13 Joanna Lindenbaum
Sacred Depths season.

00:43:59 Joanna Lindenbaum

00:44:04 Joanna Lindenbaum
And as always, please share this episode with anyone who you think it will
00:44:13 Joanna Lindenbaum
be supportive of, and let others know about this podcast.
00:44:17 Joanna Lindenbaum
You’re my best way of getting the word out.
