How to Help Clients Overcome Fear: The Difference Between Soothing and Transforming It

by Joanna Lindenbaum | Episode 83

If you’ve ever wondered how to help clients overcome fear — not just feel better for a session, but genuinely shift — this episode is for you. Most practitioners were taught to soothe fear: to reassure, reframe, regulate, and move on. And those approaches can help. Temporarily. But they rarely produce lasting change. In this episode of The Coaching R(e)volution, Joanna Lindenbaum breaks down the crucial difference between soothing fear and actually transforming it, and what it takes to become the practitioner who can do both.

What You’ll Learn in This Episode

  •     Why soothing fear — even when it’s skillfully delivered — only works temporarily
  •     The surprising reason nervous system regulation, insight work, and accountability structures often fall short when fear is the core issue
  •     What fear transformation actually requires in a coaching session
  •     How to work with fear somatically — not just cognitively
  •     The practitioner’s inner game: why your own relationship with fear directly affects your client’s results
  •     What it looks like when a client’s system genuinely reorganizes around fear — and how to support that

The Core Distinction: Soothing vs. Transforming Fear

When a client keeps returning to the same fear — week after week, session after session — it’s not a willpower problem. It’s what happens when fear gets soothed rather than transformed.

Soothing asks fear to step aside. It offers relief. And it works — for a little while. But fear is protective and intelligent, and when it isn’t genuinely met, it comes back. Often louder.

Fear transformation is different. It requires going toward fear rather than around it, meeting it in the body where it actually lives, and supporting a genuine reorganization of how the client’s system relates to that fear. The goal isn’t a fear-free client. It’s a client whose relationship to fear has fundamentally changed.

This distinction — and how to work with it in real sessions — is what Joanna teaches inside the Befriend Your Fear™ Method Certification.

Why Most Practitioners Default to Soothing

It’s not a skill gap. It’s a training gap. Most coaches, therapists, and transformational practitioners were never taught to do anything other than soothe when fear shows up. Add in the fact that your own nervous system responds to your client’s fear — and the pull toward making it better is strong.

Even highly regarded approaches can inadvertently lead us toward soothing: nervous system regulation that calms without transforming, insight work that meets the mind but not the body, accountability structures that add pressure to an already fear-activated system.

None of these are wrong. But none of them, on their own, are the same as fear transformation coaching.

The Practitioner’s Inner Game

One of the most important (and least talked about) pieces of working with client fear: your ability to do it is directly connected to your own relationship with fear.

A session is a meeting of two nervous systems. When your client goes into fear, yours responds too. If you don’t have an embodied, practiced way to stay with that — to be regulated enough to not rush toward safety — the session will organize around both of your protection strategies, not just your client’s.

Your clients feel this. Not always consciously. But in the body, they know.

This is about creating a revolution in the transformational industry so that more practitioners feel amazing about what they do and so that more of our clients experience life-changing shifts.
00:00:55 Joanna Lindenbaum
Let’s get started.
00:01:00 Joanna Lindenbaum
Welcome back, friends.
00:01:02 Joanna Lindenbaum
This is Joanna Lindenbaum.
00:01:03 Joanna Lindenbaum
I’m so glad that you’re here.
00:01:06 Joanna Lindenbaum
Today we’re going to be talking about a very important distinction and skill that I believe we need as coaches.
00:01:16 Joanna Lindenbaum
And it’s the difference between soothing fear
00:01:21 Joanna Lindenbaum
and actually transforming fear.
00:01:24 Joanna Lindenbaum
And I want to start by sharing a story about my younger daughter, Yael.
00:01:30 Joanna Lindenbaum
So Yael has always been a feeler, a deep feeler.
00:01:37 Joanna Lindenbaum
Her heart, that girl’s heart is like 10 times bigger than her body.
00:01:44 Joanna Lindenbaum
And with all of that, she’s also a worrier.
00:01:49 Joanna Lindenbaum
feelers usually are worriers as well.
00:01:53 Joanna Lindenbaum
And Yael has fears.
00:01:56 Joanna Lindenbaum
She fears that she’s not going to do well in school.
00:02:02 Joanna Lindenbaum
She has fears about friendships and social situations.
00:02:08 Joanna Lindenbaum
And she’s got fears about loved ones getting sick.
00:02:12 Joanna Lindenbaum
And
00:02:14 Joanna Lindenbaum
This last one, I think it’s because my mom was sick for so long and very sick at that for so many years.
00:02:23 Joanna Lindenbaum
And all of those years, for as much as I really tried my best to protect my children from what was going on, I couldn’t completely do that.
00:02:34 Joanna Lindenbaum
There were so many emergencies, so many dramatic moments, so many times where I had to just pick up and leave.
00:02:43 Joanna Lindenbaum
and that seeped in.
00:02:45 Joanna Lindenbaum
So anyway, when Yael was little and these fears would come up for her, any of these fears, my first instinct, I think the natural first instinct that most, parents or mothers would have, the very human instinct and loving instinct,
00:03:09 Joanna Lindenbaum
would be to say things to her like, it’s going to be OK.
00:03:14 Joanna Lindenbaum
You don’t need to be scared of that.
00:03:16 Joanna Lindenbaum
I don’t think it’s going to happen, etc., etc.
00:03:25 Joanna Lindenbaum
And that’s what I did for a while.
00:03:28 Joanna Lindenbaum
And here’s what I noticed.
00:03:32 Joanna Lindenbaum
Me saying these things, it would help.
00:03:35 Joanna Lindenbaum
for a little while, maybe for an hour or a day.
00:03:38 Joanna Lindenbaum
Yael would feel more settled, more secure.
00:03:42 Joanna Lindenbaum
But then she’d be right back in it.
00:03:47 Joanna Lindenbaum
Same fears, the same worries, but this time a little bit bigger than before, because now the fear had evidence that it needed to be reassured over and over.
00:04:00 Joanna Lindenbaum
And here’s the thing.
00:04:02 Joanna Lindenbaum
once I saw it, I knew exactly what was happening because I know this from my coaching work, from my client work.
00:04:14 Joanna Lindenbaum
Soothing can land temporarily, but it’s not actually doing anything with or for the fear long-term.
00:04:27 Joanna Lindenbaum
Soothing just distracts
00:04:32 Joanna Lindenbaum
someone from their fear.
00:04:34 Joanna Lindenbaum
It moves the fear slightly to the side.
00:04:37 Joanna Lindenbaum
So when Yael was around eight, this was about four years ago, I saw all this and I made a decision.
00:04:49 Joanna Lindenbaum
I decided that I was going to stop soothing her fear.
00:04:56 Joanna Lindenbaum
And instead,
00:04:58 Joanna Lindenbaum
I was gonna start supporting Yael with her fear in similar ways that I support my adult clients with their fear.
00:05:06 Joanna Lindenbaum
Now, okay, this might sound harsh, a mother who doesn’t soothe, but just bear with me here for a moment because I promise I did not stop being incredibly loving and warm
00:05:24 Joanna Lindenbaum
and protective.
00:05:26 Joanna Lindenbaum
I for sure have still been a very soft place for Yael to land.
00:05:35 Joanna Lindenbaum
All of that is in my bones.
00:05:37 Joanna Lindenbaum
I can’t not do that as a mother.
00:05:40 Joanna Lindenbaum
And truth be told, some soothing still does happen when she really needs it.
00:05:45 Joanna Lindenbaum
But that being said, I decided that I was going to teach Yael
00:05:54 Joanna Lindenbaum
at eight years old, how to lean in to her fear, how to be with it, how to meet it somatically, emotionally, mentally, and yet even spiritually.
00:06:11 Joanna Lindenbaum
I decided I was going to show Yael how to make friends with fear rather than just hope that it would go away.
00:06:22 Joanna Lindenbaum
And today, at age 12, she’s turned 12 about a month ago, I’ll tell you, Yale still has a lot of fears.
00:06:33 Joanna Lindenbaum
You know, that’s for sure for certain, working with fear definitely doesn’t mean that the fear disappears.
00:06:41 Joanna Lindenbaum
It doesn’t mean that the fear doesn’t still come up.
00:06:44 Joanna Lindenbaum
It means that your relationship with the fear fundamentally changes.
00:06:52 Joanna Lindenbaum
And Yael, she’s had an ongoing relationship with her fears now.
00:07:01 Joanna Lindenbaum
And because of that, she knows how to meet her fears.
00:07:06 Joanna Lindenbaum
She knows what to do with them when they show up.
00:07:09 Joanna Lindenbaum
And I hear Yael, this little 12 year old girl, I hear her sometimes with so much love, whispering
00:07:22 Joanna Lindenbaum
to herself and to her fear, whispering things like, I’ve got your back.
00:07:32 Joanna Lindenbaum
I hear her lovingly whisper to her fear, I’m not going to leave you alone.
00:07:40 Joanna Lindenbaum
I hear her whispering sometimes, I’m always going to love you and protect you.
00:07:50 Joanna Lindenbaum
Yael is 12 years old and she already knows how not to abandon herself.
00:08:04 Joanna Lindenbaum
Imagine if more adults knew how to not abandon themselves.
00:08:11 Joanna Lindenbaum
It would be a completely different world that we lived in, right?
00:08:17 Joanna Lindenbaum
I tell you the story because it’s the heart of what I want to talk about today.
00:08:25 Joanna Lindenbaum
There is a difference, a profound, life-changing difference, and I don’t say that lightly, I really mean it, between soothing fear and actually transforming fear.
00:08:42 Joanna Lindenbaum
And most of us
00:08:45 Joanna Lindenbaum
even experienced, deeply caring, highly skilled practitioners, we were never really taught that difference.
00:08:54 Joanna Lindenbaum
Not in the way that matters, not in a way that changes what we actually do in a client session when a client’s fear shows up.
00:09:04 Joanna Lindenbaum
So that’s where we’re going today.
00:09:07 Joanna Lindenbaum
Let’s dive in.
00:09:09 Joanna Lindenbaum
And
00:09:10 Joanna Lindenbaum
Let’s start by getting really clear on what soothing is.
00:09:16 Joanna Lindenbaum
Because I want to say first, there’s nothing wrong with soothing.
00:09:20 Joanna Lindenbaum
Soothing is human.
00:09:23 Joanna Lindenbaum
Soothing is loving.
00:09:25 Joanna Lindenbaum
When someone we care about is scared, of course we want to make them feel better.
00:09:31 Joanna Lindenbaum
Of course we want to offer comfort and reassurance.
00:09:37 Joanna Lindenbaum
And
00:09:38 Joanna Lindenbaum
In the right moments, soothing has real value.
00:09:43 Joanna Lindenbaum
Creating safety, offering warmth, helping someone come back into regulation when they’re flooded, all of that matters.
00:09:55 Joanna Lindenbaum
And just for the record, I love being soothed, and I have many, many times over
00:10:04 Joanna Lindenbaum
in the years with John, my husband, I’ve asked him to do nothing else but soothe me in those moments that I really need it.
00:10:13 Joanna Lindenbaum
And it’s funny because he’s finally learning now after 20 years of marriage, but I will tell you at first, for the first number of years, he kind of didn’t get it because he’s so logical and
00:10:28 Joanna Lindenbaum
He just wants to find me solutions.
00:10:30 Joanna Lindenbaum
But there are moments where I don’t want solutions.
00:10:33 Joanna Lindenbaum
I just want him to pet me and soothe me and tell me that everything’s going to be okay.
00:10:40 Joanna Lindenbaum
So anyway, soothing is and can be wonderful.
00:10:45 Joanna Lindenbaum
But here’s what soothing can’t do.
00:10:50 Joanna Lindenbaum
Soothing can’t transform fear.
00:10:55 Joanna Lindenbaum
Because
00:10:56 Joanna Lindenbaum
What soothing is essentially doing, even when it’s beautifully delivered, even when it’s genuinely warm and skillful, is this.
00:11:07 Joanna Lindenbaum
It’s asking the fear to step aside.
00:11:11 Joanna Lindenbaum
It’s saying in one form or another, you’re not needed here, fear.
00:11:17 Joanna Lindenbaum
Let’s move past you.
00:11:20 Joanna Lindenbaum
And sometimes in the moment we just need that, sure.
00:11:23 Joanna Lindenbaum
But the problem is
00:11:26 Joanna Lindenbaum
fear doesn’t respond well most of the time to being asked to leave.
00:11:34 Joanna Lindenbaum
Fear is protective.
00:11:37 Joanna Lindenbaum
It’s adaptive.
00:11:38 Joanna Lindenbaum
It exists because at some point, some part of our client’s system decided that it needed to watch out for them.
00:11:50 Joanna Lindenbaum
Protection.
00:11:51 Joanna Lindenbaum
So when you try to soothe fear,
00:11:55 Joanna Lindenbaum
when you offer reassurance or quick reframe it or help someone even breathe through it and move on, the fear may go quiet for a little while, but I can near guarantee it will always come back and often louder because it didn’t ultimately get what it actually needed.
00:12:22 Joanna Lindenbaum
And this is what I see over and over again with clients.
00:12:27 Joanna Lindenbaum
They lead their own clients to insight.
00:12:34 Joanna Lindenbaum
The insight is there.
00:12:36 Joanna Lindenbaum
The reassurance was given.
00:12:39 Joanna Lindenbaum
The regulation practice was done.
00:12:42 Joanna Lindenbaum
The reframe landed beautifully.
00:12:45 Joanna Lindenbaum
And yet, the next week, the block is still there.
00:12:52 Joanna Lindenbaum
The same place where everything tightens up and nothing moves forward is still there.
00:13:00 Joanna Lindenbaum
I see that a lot when students first come to me.
00:13:04 Joanna Lindenbaum
And that’s because the fear wasn’t transformed.
00:13:10 Joanna Lindenbaum
It was just soothed.
00:13:14 Joanna Lindenbaum
So I want to
00:13:18 Joanna Lindenbaum
pause here for a moment because when practitioners first come to me and they’re doing this, they’re not soothing their clients because they themselves are lazy or unskilled or don’t have wisdom or aren’t good coaches.
00:13:42 Joanna Lindenbaum
No, they’re soothing because
00:13:46 Joanna Lindenbaum
That’s what they were trained to do.
00:13:48 Joanna Lindenbaum
Or because no one taught them that there was another way.
00:13:54 Joanna Lindenbaum
Or because, and this is one I want you to really sit with.
00:13:59 Joanna Lindenbaum
This might be coming up for you.
00:14:02 Joanna Lindenbaum
They’re soothing because it feels risky to do anything else in the moment.
00:14:11 Joanna Lindenbaum
Think about it when a client is scared.
00:14:15 Joanna Lindenbaum
when they’re distressed, when they’re showing you their fear, your nervous system responds too.
00:14:26 Joanna Lindenbaum
You feel the urgency.
00:14:28 Joanna Lindenbaum
You feel the pull to help them feel better.
00:14:32 Joanna Lindenbaum
There is a part of you that may want to fix it, resolve it, and just help move them towards safety, feeling safe.
00:14:42 Joanna Lindenbaum
And when that happens, plus you don’t have a clear, reliable, practiced way to do something other than soothe, well, soothing is just what happens.
00:14:55 Joanna Lindenbaum
Not because you’re not a good practitioner, but because the alternative, which is staying with the fear, leaning into it, working with it rather than around it,
00:15:09 Joanna Lindenbaum
That requires a level of skill and inner capacity that most practitioners just simply were never taught.
00:15:19 Joanna Lindenbaum
Now there’s also something else here that I want to name.
00:15:23 Joanna Lindenbaum
Some of the approaches that most coaches and practitioners are trained in, even the good ones, even the ones rooted in real wisdom,
00:15:36 Joanna Lindenbaum
They can inadvertently lead us towards soothing.
00:15:42 Joanna Lindenbaum
So let me give you a few examples of this.
00:15:44 Joanna Lindenbaum
Let’s take a look at nervous system regulation work.
00:15:51 Joanna Lindenbaum
Nervous system regulation.
00:15:52 Joanna Lindenbaum
It’s an incredible body of work, and it is essential, such good work.
00:15:59 Joanna Lindenbaum
And regulation alone isn’t transformation.
00:16:08 Joanna Lindenbaum
A client can get very skilled at calming their system inside of sessions, but still not raise their rates.
00:16:20 Joanna Lindenbaum
still not have the hard conversations, still not follow through.
00:16:26 Joanna Lindenbaum
And that’s because the fear wasn’t transformed.
00:16:32 Joanna Lindenbaum
It was regulated in the moment, important, yes, but it wasn’t transformed.
00:16:41 Joanna Lindenbaum
Give you another example, insight work.
00:16:45 Joanna Lindenbaum
Insight work
00:16:47 Joanna Lindenbaum
is also profound.
00:16:48 Joanna Lindenbaum
I’m a big transformation nerd, and if you’re a transformation nerd like me, you love insight and co-creating insight with clients.
00:16:59 Joanna Lindenbaum
But it’s also not enough on its own.
00:17:03 Joanna Lindenbaum
A client can understand exactly why they’re afraid.
00:17:08 Joanna Lindenbaum
They can connect it to childhood or whenever in their life.
00:17:12 Joanna Lindenbaum
They can name the pattern.
00:17:14 Joanna Lindenbaum
They can see the root clearly.
00:17:16 Joanna Lindenbaum
and then still do nothing with the knowledge.
00:17:20 Joanna Lindenbaum
It’s just like you have this great breakthrough and then dust.
00:17:25 Joanna Lindenbaum
You write it down in your notebook and then it just gathers dust, right?
00:17:31 Joanna Lindenbaum
That’s because insight happens in the mind, but fear lives in the body.
00:17:39 Joanna Lindenbaum
So these approaches aren’t wrong.
00:17:42 Joanna Lindenbaum
Others aren’t wrong.
00:17:44 Joanna Lindenbaum
But they’re not the same as actually transforming fear.
00:17:49 Joanna Lindenbaum
They’re doing a version of soothing fear, at least on their own.
00:17:56 Joanna Lindenbaum
They’re doing a version of soothing fear.
00:18:00 Joanna Lindenbaum
So then what does it mean to actually transform fear?
00:18:07 Joanna Lindenbaum
Well, let me tell you first what it isn’t.
00:18:15 Joanna Lindenbaum
It isn’t transforming fear isn’t getting rid of fear.
00:18:22 Joanna Lindenbaum
I want to be really clear about this.
00:18:24 Joanna Lindenbaum
The goal is never, ever, ever, ever a fear free client.
00:18:31 Joanna Lindenbaum
The goal is never, ever, ever about releasing the fear.
00:18:37 Joanna Lindenbaum
The goal is never about moving past fear.
00:18:42 Joanna Lindenbaum
It’s certainly not about conquering it.
00:18:45 Joanna Lindenbaum
Fear is not the enemy.
00:18:47 Joanna Lindenbaum
Like I said earlier, fear is protection and it’s deeply intelligent and it is very human.
00:18:56 Joanna Lindenbaum
So think about what I shared with Yael, my daughter.
00:19:01 Joanna Lindenbaum
The fear hasn’t gone away.
00:19:03 Joanna Lindenbaum
Like I said, it’s not supposed to.
00:19:06 Joanna Lindenbaum
What changed was her relationship to the fear.
00:19:12 Joanna Lindenbaum
She doesn’t need it to leave anymore.
00:19:16 Joanna Lindenbaum
She can be with it.
00:19:18 Joanna Lindenbaum
She can work with it.
00:19:21 Joanna Lindenbaum
She’s become friends with it.
00:19:25 Joanna Lindenbaum
That’s transformation.
00:19:29 Joanna Lindenbaum
Fear transformation, the kind that creates lasting change, it involves many, many things when we’re working with clients.
00:19:41 Joanna Lindenbaum
And I want to share four important pieces right now that are specifically the opposite of soothing fear, or in other words, distracting from fear.
00:19:59 Joanna Lindenbaum
OK, so number one, you want to go towards the fear.
00:20:04 Joanna Lindenbaum
You want to lean into the fear rather than around it.
00:20:10 Joanna Lindenbaum
So this isn’t about bulldozing fear away or forcing fear away, or even gently, lovingly releasing fear.
00:20:23 Joanna Lindenbaum
But this is about skillfully with care, helping your client actually turn towards the fear and be with it.
00:20:35 Joanna Lindenbaum
Face what’s there.
00:20:39 Joanna Lindenbaum
Number two, you wanna help your client meet the fear somatically because fear lives in the body, right?
00:20:51 Joanna Lindenbaum
It’s not just a thought, it’s a felt experience.
00:20:58 Joanna Lindenbaum
Real transformation of fear has to reach the body, not just the mind.
00:21:09 Joanna Lindenbaum
Third thing I want you to remember so that you don’t inadvertently soothe, but instead you help transform the fear.
00:21:20 Joanna Lindenbaum
Help the fear feel met by your client.
00:21:27 Joanna Lindenbaum
Help the fear feel met by your client.
00:21:31 Joanna Lindenbaum
So this is the opposite of bypassing or dismissing.
00:21:37 Joanna Lindenbaum
You want to help the fear feel genuinely met.
00:21:41 Joanna Lindenbaum
And this is a skill.
00:21:42 Joanna Lindenbaum
It requires knowing how to be with a client in their fear without rushing them out of it.
00:21:49 Joanna Lindenbaum
It also requires your own nervous system to be regulated enough so that you’re not subtly pulling a client towards safety before they’re ready.
00:22:02 Joanna Lindenbaum
And when I say pulling them towards safety, we always want to keep our clients safe.
00:22:07 Joanna Lindenbaum
But what I mean by that is that you’re not rushing to fix and you’re not rushing to soothe.
00:22:17 Joanna Lindenbaum
The fourth thing I want you to remember for today is that you want to work with what the fear is protecting.
00:22:28 Joanna Lindenbaum
So fear is almost never random.
00:22:31 Joanna Lindenbaum
It’s almost always guarding something, an old wound, a deep belief, a part of the self that learned to stay small, etc., etc.
00:22:43 Joanna Lindenbaum
Transformation happens when we can lean in, when we can work with the protective layer, and when we can work with it skillfully enough to reach what’s underneath.
00:22:59 Joanna Lindenbaum
Okay, so here is what I want you to know.
00:23:02 Joanna Lindenbaum
When you can do this, when you have the skills and the inner capacity to actually work with fear at this level, so much changes.
00:23:11 Joanna Lindenbaum
Sessions change.
00:23:13 Joanna Lindenbaum
Your clients change in ways that are real and lasting, in ways that they talk about for years.
00:23:21 Joanna Lindenbaum
And when you can do this, you change.
00:23:26 Joanna Lindenbaum
Because the self-doubt that comes from not knowing what to do in those hard moments with clients, the questions of, can I really do this?
00:23:37 Joanna Lindenbaum
Am I really good enough?
00:23:38 Joanna Lindenbaum
That starts to dissolve.
00:23:41 Joanna Lindenbaum
And when that starts to dissolve, your business changes.
00:23:45 Joanna Lindenbaum
Because clients who experience that level of transformation, they renew.
00:23:51 Joanna Lindenbaum
They refer.
00:23:52 Joanna Lindenbaum
They become advocates for your work in ways that feel both deeply earned and also profoundly fulfilling.
00:24:03 Joanna Lindenbaum
So I want to say one more thing before we close, and it’s probably the most important thing.
00:24:13 Joanna Lindenbaum
Your ability to work with your clients’ fear
00:24:17 Joanna Lindenbaum
is directly connected to your own relationship with fear.
00:24:24 Joanna Lindenbaum
If you’ve learned from me before, you know that I often say a session isn’t just an exchange of information.
00:24:34 Joanna Lindenbaum
It’s an exchange between two nervous systems.
00:24:40 Joanna Lindenbaum
And when your client is in fear, when they’re stuck or looping,
00:24:48 Joanna Lindenbaum
or procrastinating, etc., your system responds to that.
00:24:54 Joanna Lindenbaum
And even if you understand the nervous system, even if you’ve done your own work, even if you’re highly skilled, there are still places where your own fear may get activated in response to your client’s fear.
00:25:12 Joanna Lindenbaum
And it might show up in subtle ways,
00:25:15 Joanna Lindenbaum
a slight energetic leaning forward, a pull to offer a solution just a little bit too quickly.
00:25:23 Joanna Lindenbaum
All of these are things that try to soothe, right?
00:25:27 Joanna Lindenbaum
All of these are kind of things that what’s driving it in the end is your system saying, let me get the both of us out of this, right?
00:25:38 Joanna Lindenbaum
And when that happens, when your system is even slightly activated by your client’s fear, the session then starts to organize around not only your client’s protection strategies, but your protection strategies as well.
00:25:59 Joanna Lindenbaum
And when this happens, I always say energy follows energy.
00:26:04 Joanna Lindenbaum
Your clients will feel it.
00:26:06 Joanna Lindenbaum
They may not feel it consciously, but they will feel it at the level of the body, that something is off, that it is two systems trying to protect themselves.
00:26:21 Joanna Lindenbaum
Which is why this work, this work of learning to work skillfully with fear, it begins with you.
00:26:29 Joanna Lindenbaum
It begins with your own relationship to fear.
00:26:35 Joanna Lindenbaum
your own capacity to be with discomfort without rushing towards resolution, your own practice of meeting fear rather than soothing it away.
00:26:50 Joanna Lindenbaum
Because let’s be honest, when we try to soothe our clients fears,
00:26:57 Joanna Lindenbaum
Yes, it comes from love and care, but it also comes from our need to feel more comfortable by making our clients more comfortable.
00:27:12 Joanna Lindenbaum
So when Yael learned to say to her fear, I’m not going to leave you alone.
00:27:24 Joanna Lindenbaum
I’m here for you.
00:27:28 Joanna Lindenbaum
She learned that in part because of what she saw coming from me.
00:27:38 Joanna Lindenbaum
Because this is how I started responding to her fear after I decided to stop soothing it.
00:27:48 Joanna Lindenbaum
And your clients, they’re going to learn
00:27:54 Joanna Lindenbaum
how to transform fear, what that looks like from you, not just from the techniques you use to work with the fear, those are important, but also from how you respond to their fear, from how you stay in the room with them when things get hard, from your capacity, from how you meet their fear with skill and steadiness,
00:28:23 Joanna Lindenbaum
instead of urgency and reassurance.
00:28:27 Joanna Lindenbaum
All of this is what I call coaching mastery and it is absolutely learnable.
00:28:35 Joanna Lindenbaum
Okay, so let me leave you with this.
00:28:38 Joanna Lindenbaum
As you move into your work this week, into your sessions, your groups, and your own personal life, I want you to notice one thing.
00:28:47 Joanna Lindenbaum
want to invite you to notice what happens when fear shows up in your clients and in yourself.
00:28:54 Joanna Lindenbaum
And I want you to ask yourself, am I soothing this or am I working with this?
00:29:02 Joanna Lindenbaum
And again, not as a judgment for your awareness, right?
00:29:06 Joanna Lindenbaum
Just as a beginning.
00:29:09 Joanna Lindenbaum
Because if you’re soothing, which most of us were taught to do,
00:29:16 Joanna Lindenbaum
There’s another level available, a level where you can be the practitioner who helps a client’s system actually reorganize, where the change is real and lasting and life altering, where your clients walk away not just feeling a little better, but feeling truly different.
00:29:38 Joanna Lindenbaum
And that cannot happen from soothing.
00:29:43 Joanna Lindenbaum
If you would like to go deeper into exactly how to do all of this, there’s still time to join the Befriend Your Fear method certification.
00:29:54 Joanna Lindenbaum
This is where you learn to work with fear at the level that I’ve been describing today, not just conceptually, but in your sessions with real clients in your own body.
00:30:06 Joanna Lindenbaum
And I’ll link to it in the show notes, and I hope that you’ll take a look.
00:30:13 Joanna Lindenbaum
So I hope that you received everything that you needed to receive from our time together today.
00:30:20 Joanna Lindenbaum
